Lived in Durango Co for many years and have traveled that road several times. Must say, it is the scariest I've been on.......and try it in the winter with tons of snow and ice. Bring an extra pair of pants with you. But it is beautiful out there. Sure do miss the West.

We just returned from Fl and a stay in TV and drove the turnpike. I didn't find anything unusual about it. Other than having to pay tolls.

I had to delete the body of my message because I could not get the hyperlink from YouTube to "stick" to my post. It showed on my draft but not on the final post. The video was hair raising.........many sections with no guard rails. It was from Silverton Colorado to Ouray.......our daughter's family took the Million Dollar Highway to get to Mesa Verde National park where the "cliff dwellings" are..........from the old Pueblo Indians......... Not as bad as the Death Road Truckers in India or Peru.........but as Aussie mom said also, it's scary.......... |

This was end of December.......so you can picture the snow and ice. Thankfully, her husband drove very slowly. The video I wanted to send was speeded up but still hair raising. Two years ago, they went again to visit Mesa Verde National Park, this time bringing their three children with them..........again they took the MILLION DOLLAR HIGHWAY............but only "one way".......returned on a lower road so they wouldn't have to drive the side with no guard rails. Anyone who has seen DEATH ROAD TRUCKERS knows what it's like. Maybe not that bad.........but still. Nothing wrong with the Florida Turnpike.........that was just a come on to the video which I could NOT post the hyperlink to.........it disappeared. |

If you think it is bad now.......
The State of Florida, just this week, had a public meeting to discuss plans to widen the turnpike. To try to stay ahead of projected population growth the state wants to widen the turnpike from four lanes to either six or eight lanes from Wildwood to Minneola. The study should be done by fall of 2013 and permits may take 2 to 3 yrs before construction starts.
