It's going to very difficult to keep this thread from being moved to the political forum.

As a reminder, the original topic dealt with how the Daily Sun covered national and local events.

I agree with you, but I still say it belongs in political now just as much as it would if someone posted a message about how Krugman was shamelessly bashing several Republican figures and criticzing the NY Times for it.

In this age of electronic media one can find whatever balance or imbalance that one wants. You are no longer a captive of what the local paper decides to print. I don't view the Sun as anything more than a "what's going on around town" funpaper. However, do note that the writer for the national news coverage is the AP and hence not much different that what you would find in any newspaper - just that you may find it on page 2 rather than page 1.

If we chose where we lived based on the political orientation of the newspaper we would truly become more polarized as a country. Our neighborhood has its share of Obama bashers but the Bush bashers still chime in even though he's been out of office for almost 3 years. In the end the topic quickly turns to golf, vacations, grandkids and all the other non-controversial stuff and everyone gets along. If you need to be surrounded by people whose focus is politics and whose views are sympathetic with your own, there may be better places to choose to live.

We moved here knowing that TV was pretty conservative. We decided not to get into political discussions for a variety of reasons. It finally became difficult for us to keep our views to ourselves. When we let the Obama bashers know we did not agree, one would have thought we had sprouted an extra head and horns. We are still friends with our anti-liberal friends and can even joke a bit about it. We also have found out that there are many "of us" in TV so it isn't completely lopsided.

We often role our eyes at the "news" in The Daily Fun," and we subscribe to USA Today to find out what is really happening outside of our bubble.

I hope if you move here, you will be able to enjoy the many good things and not let politics ruin it for you.

Ditto!

All newspapers/periodicals I've ever seen lean toward one direction or another on MANY topics and that is often influenced by the owner of the paper. As an owner, I imagine it would take tremendous diligence to deliberately monitor your belief system to keep any 'signature' from developing in what you choose to print.

We can't ever be certain that we get the 100% or a 'balanced' reporting about anything we read anywhere, be it current events or a history book.
Even pictures don't always give you the full picture.

Read what peaks your curiosity, investigate further if you desire, discern what rings true to you and let the rest go.

Good post Uptown Girl. I'll add to what you said that anyone can write a letter to the editor if they have an issue with what the paper publishes! Their political opinions of a newspaper are not my opinions, and I chose not to hear theirs on TOTV when I did not sign up for the political forum. The exact same goes the other way too when it comes to my political opinions. However, I do defend the right of people, even when I disagree, to express their opinions, but only where and when it's appropriate... not anywhere when they feel like it!

I hear what you are saying skyguy, but therein lies the dilemma.... you are thinking in terms of having to tolerate (or not!) and still getting your gut in a twist.

Think about how that affects you.... because, in reality, no matter how you try to enlighten others, you are really pushing AGAINST what you don't want.
I know that well, I did it for years. Doesn't work.

Instead, ALLOW them to be, do and say what they want and don't become entangled. Sing a tune in your head, plug your ears and chant, "La La La", imagine them with pie on their face..... whatever it takes to change the channel in your head.
And when you leave their company, (whenever you feel so inspired) DON'T regurgitate the unpleasantness over and over again in your mind, or retell the tale to another. You'll just twist your gut again, and that harms you more than you know.
Let that crud go and put your focus on things that please you and feel good to focus upon.

"They" can dance somewhere else. And so can you.
Takes a little practice to pull off.... but becomes easier each time.
One of the best things I ever learned!

The Daily Sun is just a developer newsletter...

I would't consider it a newspaper whatsoever. It should be delivered free on that basis. However, the lifestyle aspects can be fun to read...like a great
neighborhood newsletter, but with photo's. I consider real news critical, and
I look to quality newspapers to provide varying opinions for the readers.
The word NEWS comes from North, East, West, South and provides a slice
or more of real information for thinkers from all directions all over the world.
I guess you pay your money and you take your choice. I buy it sometimes for under the kitty litter box. My dream in moving here was to find a newspaper using the skills and talents of multiple journalists who live here, balanced political reporting, and facts for my interpretation and understanding. That kind of newspapaer in The Villages would be an
outstanding feat, and a welcome daily read. All I have to do is walk outside
to get my fuzzies, why pay for it in the driveway if you know what I mean?
And yes, it is Republican biased, heavily. Also not for me as another
'closet liberal'.

This is not intended to be political. This is intended to present a fact about what the Daily Sun will and will not publish.

The Daily Sun would not publish any information about Debbie Wasserman Schultz, head of the Democratic National Committee, coming to The Villages and talking to over 300 people at La Hacienda a couple of weeks ago. The Leesburg Daily Commercial was happy to oblige but not The Sun. Here's the Daily Commercial link (Yes, she was heckled here in The Villages which isn't a surprise.).

There's no better way to keep up with what's happening in The Villages than it's own daily newspaper, but no one is obligated to read it, let alone purchase it.

I'd say the paper reflects the populace pretty well. There's so much else to read either by subscription or free every day on the internet, which is where I get my outside of the Villages news.

But where else are you going to find those restaurant coupons and specials, and info on who's entertaining where?

My, my. I think it is a great newspaper and it is delivered right to my door. I personally use the New York Times for my fish wrapping.;)

Nicely said! I use the "La La La" when I want to tune someone out! At this point in my life I try not to dwell on anything negative. (I won't even discuss religion or politics with anyone.) Life is just too short to stress yourself out! :)

Really, that's the second topic of conversation in myneighborhood, right after their aches and pains.

I sure hope it is not in my soon to be new neighborhood. Moving to TV from metro Washington DC I've had politics up to my eyeballs and want to get away from them.

There is no problem here. If you are a liberal do not read the paper. If you want to read the paper and not get upset, then just read the sports and lifestyle pages. A big todo about nothing. IMHO

This is what I plan to do..........well maybe not sports. :icon_wink:

Hmmm...I don't really care what your politics are but I did notice in your signature lines that at one time you lived in Ann Arbor.....for that you have my extreme sympathy.....ah yes my blood runs green and white.....go Sparty!

I'm sure if the President visits the Villages, the Daily Sun would give him a lot of space in the paper.

I read these posts with great interest. My wife and I are currently getting our act together to make the move (hopefully by Spring of 2012) to TV. We area little concerned about the Republican leaning thought in TV. Believe me everyone has the right to have their own opinions political and otherwise. We are planning to just keep our opinions to ourselves and to enjoy the wonderful lifestyle TV has to offer.
