He's a done deal for approval

However, Congress almost immediately allowed for an exception for George C. Marshall

Mattis has the endorsement of Senator John McCain, a Republican and Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Armed Services Committee member Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said he's "confident the waiver allowing him to serve as secretary of Defense will be approved by Congress."

Gillibrand was talking about Sec of Defense, who is required under federal law to be a civilian. This law has been on the books since 1947 and no waiver request has been made since 1950.

Democrats can prevent Mattis from getting the waiver, and therefore will not be confirmed.

Powell was retired. Mattis is retired. The rule is that he has to have left the service at least seven years, without a waiver. A waiver has been granted before, and it can be again. He is a civilian now so he is NOT military.

Time for the left to either get on the wagon or sit back and shut up. Either way is the "PC" way to handle the situation.

Don't be so defensive. Many democrats support him.

After some verbal bombs, he will get the waiver and then go through an ordeal till confirmed.

You folks need to get out and see how it works. It is difficult to not be confirmed...,now Sessions will be the biggest problem.

Please list eight or nine democrats that Trump can pull out of his hat to support the waiver that Mattis will need get to confirmation. McCain and Graham are republicans.

Sen. Chris Coons, a Democrat from Delaware,
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D., N.H.),

Rep. Adam Schiff (Calif.), the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee,

Michèle Flournoy, a Democrat who was seen as a top candidate to head the Defense Department under a Hillary Clinton administration, said Mattis would be an “outstanding candidate” to head the Pentagon.

The George C Marshall waiver happened in 1950, when Harry Truman was president. A lot has changed since then.

That is two democratic senators, still need six or seven more. Only the senate votes on the waiver, and there must be 60 votes to pass.

Peace Through Strength

The- thread is called Gen Miattis (mad dog) eager for confrontation with Iran. I believe in the phrase peace through strength. It seems to me counter-intuitive to allow nations who are clearly evil and aggressive to operate with impunity. 9/11 should have taught us a very important lesson. And the subsequent attacks in Asia, Europe, Africa and America on innocent people by these evil doers are not going away. Iran, is a sponsor of terror.

I believe the mistake we have made for a long time is ignoring our generals and trying to politically fight our wars.

If you objectively view Trump's choices he is making it clear to our enemy that the Obama strategy from leading from behind is over.

Trump by his own admission does not favor war but he is also a guy who deals in present realities
