Your thinking seems to mirror the NRA's supporting more guns and ammo available with very little oversight will take care of crime. Apparently not, if you are applauding.

He doesn't realize that he is taking the liberal side of the debate. That makes him a liberal, regardless of what his party affiliation is. It's OK for him to have a gun, but he does not wish anyone else to have one. He feels threatened by anyone else have control of a firearm. He doesn't care about anyone else around him, therefore he takes the exact position of a liberal.
