how free speech is censored on the Internet
This was written by Tim Berners-Lee and Daniel Weitzner
[Tim is an English computer scientist, best known as the inventor of the World Wide Web.] Ted Cruz is wrong about how free speech is censored on the Internet - The Washington Post Let’s consider the most egregious threats to free speech and human rights online. Egypt shuts down nearly all Internet traffic during the Arab Spring to disrupt citizen’s right to oppose the government. Pakistan blocks access to entire platforms such as YouTube because they host a few offending videos, with the result that a huge amount of speech is suppressed. ICANN [The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is the private sector, non-profit corporation created in 1998] had no role in these shutdowns nor could it prevent them. Countries such as China and Iran operate large-scale firewalls controlling nearly all of the Internet’s content within their countries and restricting what information can cross the border. ICANN cannot shut down these firewalls. And Russia routinely mounts attacks on web sites of opposition groups inside and outside the country, leading to suppression of democratic discourse. ICANN has no role in preventing this kind of hacking. Trump is of the same opinion because neither one knows how the internet works. |

Before HTML and the web, there was still the internet (formerly Arpanet). It could be browsed through text menus using the "gopher" protocol which could return menus of additional links or text documents. But documents couldn't have embedded hyperlinks or images in them -- they were strictly text documents. Tim Berners-Lee applied a structured document model (HTML) with embedded links to other documents, creating the "web" as we know it, not the internet.

Al Gore and the Internet
By Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf Al Gore was the first political leader to recognize the importance of the Internet and to promote and support its development. No one person or even small group of persons exclusively "invented" the Internet. It is the result of many years of ongoing collaboration among people in government and the university community. But as the two people who designed the basic architecture and the core protocols that make the Internet work, we would like to acknowledge VP Gore's contributions as a Congressman, Senator and as Vice President. No other elected official, to our knowledge, has made a greater contribution over a longer period of time. Last year the Vice President made a straightforward statement on his role. He said: "During my service in the United States Congress I took the initiative in creating the Internet." We don't think, as some people have argued, that Gore intended to claim he "invented" the Internet. Moreover, there is no question in our minds that while serving as Senator, Gore's initiatives had a significant and beneficial effect on the still-evolving Internet. The fact of the matter is that Gore was talking about and promoting the Internet long before most people were listening. We feel it is timely to offer our perspective. http://web.eecs.umich.edu/~fessler/m...y/gore,net.txt Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf Robert Elliot "Bob" Kahn (born December 23, 1938) is an American electrical engineer, who, along with Vint Cerf, invented the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the Internet Protocol (IP), the fundamental communication protocols at the heart of the Internet. Vinton Gray Cerf[1] ForMemRS, (/ˈsɜːrf/; born June 23, 1943) is an American Internet pioneer, who is recognized as one of[6] "the fathers of the Internet",[7] sharing this title with TCP/IP co-inventor Bob Kahn.[8][9] His contributions have been acknowledged and lauded, repeatedly, with honorary degrees and awards that include the National Medal of Technology,[1] the Turing Award,[10] the Presidential Medal of Freedom,[11] the Marconi Prize and membership in the National Academy of Engineering. Understanding how it all works is not that easy. I'll look for something in youtube if there is enough interest. |

Who cares WHO invented it. Obama is giving it away to foreigners and they will be able to shut us down once they control it.

I wonder if we will be able to keep control of the second layer of the next Internet, or is someone going to give that away too? This internet has limited IP addresses anyway. The next one will expand on the size and amount of variations to the IP addresses. The old one will be antiquated in comparison. The new one will be much faster also.

He who controls the "pipes", controls the internet. If the government wants the internet down, it'll be down.
It's NOT turning it off that is the problem. The REAL threat to free speech is that those who try to practice it, are banned, simply deleted and their posts go with them. The liberals make such a fit over "he said this or that" that the operators cave and censor. Liberals have no argument and thus must stop ALL rational discussion. We're being snookered and we're going to lose our culture and our culture if we don't stop it. |

If Hillary wins you will see new restrictions on free speech , the internet , and even over the airwaves . She will lead the charge to shut down conservative talk programs by demanding equal time for liberal talk programs which have been shown to not draw an audience and thus advertisers . It`s a great trick . Obama tried to get it in place right after he was elected but he got too much push back .

Now, Trump is the person who often threatens the press with blacklists and the like and throws people out of his meetings for exercising their free speech. |

Believe the people who created the internet, the experts. Then find out who also believes them and decide.
