Walter Cronkite a well respected journalist and avowed liberal explained once that he advised his daughter not to attend college because it would rob her of her individuality, creativity etc. He also believed that colleges were indoctrination centers .

if I had young children today they would be homed schooled rather than send them to a public school because our educational system is detrimental to their mental health given their curriculum and daffy educators

But not as daffy as this nonsensical post.

I have found just the opposite. You read the wrong places.

YES, young people through the ages will experiment with different thoughts and ideas and you want to destroy that chance for them. I disagree with 100%. You should take the time and meet with and talk to some young college graduates....they blow me away and are really sharp. THEY make me feel good about the future. Most old white guys are simply bitching because the world did not stand still for them.

Do I agree with some of the things that happen on campus....hell no, but my parents hated some of the things I did and said in those years.

BY THE WAY....I investigated and found zero record of any time that Walter Cronkite said he did not want his daughter to go to college because of anything, let alone the behavior in those schools. Kept running into his name on college buildings or courses named after him however.

That's because RubiTHECon is nothing but a plagiarizing, insecure and now confirmed racist, pseudo-intellectual liar...just like the scum he worships. :ohdear:

I think that you have to take things in context. Today, many colleges are more interested in making money and growing than they are in education. Our society has also convinced parents that their kids are a failure if they don't go to college. I've got news. Not every kid is college material and many to very well as plumbers, electricians, and auto mechanics. A good friend of mine went o trade school and is now in charge of maintenance for a major airline at one of the busiest airports in the country.

I taught at a college for 15 years and I would say that the majority of kids in my class had no business being in college. Many shouldn't have been given high school diplomas. They were there because their parents forked over the money and that's all colleges are interested in these days. We have teachers unions and colleges working hard to make everyone feel that they must go to college.

I have two sons. One is an auto mechanic and the other is a software engineer. One went to college and they other got his training in the US military. They both are very successful in their fields.

My brother has two sons. One went to college for journalism. He is 27 years old, lives at home and works part time covering high school sports for a local newspaper. He also works in the bag room of a local country club in the summer. His brother went to trade school and became a plumber. He's very successful, owns his own business and owns a house.

Colleges are interested in growing and becoming universities. The people that work at universities make more money. The people that run colleges want as many kids going as possible because the more students they have, the more money they make. Standards for getting into college have been lowered to this end. Many colleges, especially state schools will take anyone that has the money. I know kids that didn't have a high school diploma that got into college. The college just offered them the high school classes that they needed in order to have enough credits to graduate.

Now if a kid couldn't make it through high school, what do you think his chances are at getting a college degree?

And they'll give most kids a bachelor's degree if they simply attend class.

I worked with a young man who had a degree and he was working as a shoe salesman in a golf store. His degree was in communications and he was holding out for a job as a sports radio personality. This kid was a dumb as a box of rocks and never should have graduated from college. In fact, he got in on a football scholarship which he lost in his senior year because he was caught taking drugs. I haven't seen him in over ten years but I'm guessing that he's still selling golf shoes.

Are colleges bad for America? Many of them are and the notion that they promote that every kid needs to go to college or is a failure is bad for America.

So, not every person is cut out for, or should go to college, but those who do get a degree have a better than average chance of getting a good job, and career. For those who cannot, or will not get a college degree, there should be more technical schools available for them. Currently, things like auto mechanics, shop, and other trades that once were taught at the high school level have been discontinued because of budget problems with the school districts.

It is a Republican platform, and ideology to reduce taxes, which means that for many school districts dependent upon tax revenue for their continued existence, the population of Republicans in that area care more for their tax savings than for their childrens' education, nor for the continued growth of the economy that is driven by well educated people in both employment and businesses that they have built.

It is more an economic problem, rather than a subjective opinion that we face (along with many other problems) but in the words of an old adage: you get what you pay for.....

Selling shoes, or other consumer goods takes perseverance, persuasion, and good nature. So many of us should not look down on certain occupations, but, rather celebrate those who are excelling at them, and work to provide other avenues that can make their lives fulfilling. For some, that is college.

Great post. Reasoned and sensible.

I agree with the concept you state. Recognizing vocational training along with college is sensible, but dismissing a college education is yet another way to dumb down and control thought process.

What is still bothering me is Rubicon posting that young folks should not attend college because they are "indoctrination centers"

Politicizing a college education is just flat out wrong to do. All young people attending college not only are there to learn, but also to try out different thought processes. Anyone who says otherwise are lying. Campus violence is certainly abhorrent, but to have an attitude that politics of any kind should interfere with the growth of our young people, or to insure they are not allowed to open their mind is wrong.

We are getting carried away with all the labeling.

Ignoring the praise of Karl Marx, I strongly object subjecting young people to a narrow, selected band of knowledge and experience.

College helps open a young persons mind, and to suggest corralling or thwarting that, to me is offensive.

And you are still an idiot in denial of your miserable election loss. And nothing will change that for you. It's a shame that you can't get over it, but I really don't care if you do or not. Your party is dying and will disappear, but you will continue to be an idiot. And I do not mean that in a nasty way, just stating fact.

It's for you.

You still don't get it, bringing up the inauguration. Idiot. Working America will once again show you the real poll. In the ballot booths.

I explained to you point by point why Trump would win the election HUGELY! Are you too old to learn? Are you 78 too?

The presidential elections are not based on popular vote. Your bringing it up again and again shows you are just another retard.

Your only chance to win is to use soros and Jeff bezos billions and move the good Ole welfare folks out into other states.

Of course they are doing it already, getting as many puerto Ricans into Florida as possible.

Liberals .... trying hard as hell to turn America into Venezuela.

Old fools like cnm et al, will never see the greatness of Ivanka Trump's presidency

It's for you.

No they don't. College is a commodity now...100,000 graduates for 10,000 jobs. They convinced all these inner city idiots that college was their way out. For them...it's not. No respectable corporation is going to hire some inner city creaton.

I think you mean title 10 type programs took the money. Gotta have girls sports...even though they suck compared to the boys.

They ARE indoctrination centers...you're ONLY going to get ONE side.Take race or gender studies...you're not going to get the unbiased truth. You're not going to know the truth.

It confuses the minorities mind. Look how low the standards have gotten. And they STILL fail at alarming rates. Only like 5% of affirmative action students graduate.

The profit motive is indeed another factor.

Recruiting for quantity vis a vis quality (suitability) diminishes a college/university's reputation and certainly harms the student .

Its my understanding that far too many students are not even aware of how much college debt they have accumulated. This is another example for the claim that parents and teachers have failed to transform kids to adults

the antics we see at universities today speech repressions, trigger warnings, etc are because too many kids never grew up to the realities of life.

Drugs in my view are a big factor including the use of marijuana

The curriculum offered at many colleges and universities
has drifted so far that it no longer prepares students properly to master the tasks o their employment

I recruited and hired a lot of people and noticed as far back as the 1980's that many simply were what we refer to now as trophy babies .

There was a time when a high school did a good job of separating students who would fit well in a trade, business or college.

Many trades today pay better than many college level job positions primarily because of supply and demand.
many manufacturing jobs go unfilled everyday.

The truth...makes no difference? Maybe to YOU.

Whites ARE genetically "weaker" than blacks. WHY do you think blacks make the better football players, better boxers? Because physically they ARE stronger. They're also stupid. They beat us physically...we destroy them intellectually. Need proof? We created western civilization and technology...they STILL live in mud huts in Africa.

I compare whites and blacks to dogs and wolves all the time. One is "domesticated" and can get along in society...the other...the blacks...are like wild, unpredictable, dangerous wolves.

Keep up boyer. If you're going to b!tch about me...at least get it right.
