Default Is this my America?

The fact that people think this way is beyond me! I mentioned the other day in a thread that I thought racism and prejudice thoughts were in all of us...

BUT this is just ignorance...I honestly must be so naive to have thought that people were more educated then this....

This is worse then the Howard Stern video. Is this MY America?

Unfortunately to the answer is yes. And let me make something clear, neither of these gentlemen are my first choice nor do they carry my ringing endorsement without qualification.

The bigots in the video are simply more transparent and vociferous than most with regard to thieir fears. They are however representative of a large group of americans with an underlying fear of blacks, especially in a position of power. This fire has been stoked in subltle and not so subtle ways, and the opposition to Obama has certainly been the purveyor of much of the misinterpretation and misrepresentation of any information that could be presented in ways to appeal to different aspects of bigots in american society.

Even on this board are one or two examples of people that try to coyly and frequently make sideways refereces to things about Obama and race. Make no bones about it, the ramping up of the references to "palling around with terrorists", the use of his middle name, and attempts at subtle(?) references to what is percieved to be Obamas "base" of voters are based in using racial fears to stoke the fires of ignorance and prey on prejudices. To deny this is occurring indicates severe naivete, dishonesty, or a condition of denial for what ever the motivation may be.

This is not to say that there are not serious questions about both candidates policies that need a deep and exacting examination before commiting to either one as a leader of our country. That however should be driven by how we think those policies will effect us individually and our country as a whole. This would mean factual examinations (as much as campaign promises can be subject to that) and not the entertaining of the manipulative presentation of things as noted above.

So yes this is our America...or more appropriately a piece of it that many of us will find distasteful. And no they are not all inarticulate rednecks. I have heard similar comments from bankers, physicians, admistrators, and sweet little old blue haired ladies with much "standing" in their communities and churches, and articulate people hiding behind avatars, just worded (sometimes) in less inflamatory or obvious language, or whispered as they look around.

I guess the redeeming point is that even in the face of this there is a broad constituency of people from all colors, all walks of life that are willing to endorse someone they think is qualified whether he is black or not (perhaps even in spite of it). There is ingnorance and prejudice in every society, but I don't think it dominates ours at the point, though it is certainly alive and well.

al jazeera ..... al jazeera .... al jazeera

Cassie
This is my FIRST and, probably, my last contribution to the political thread.

al jazeera

Even I could go into some rural and inner city areas of America with a camera and a recorder and find racists and bigots of every color .... and I'm not even a pro at it.

al jazeera

I doubt very much that al jazeera would ever show anything other than a dark side of America. I'll NEVER forget the excitement al jazeera reporters and anchor people in the Middle East expressed following the mass murders in America on 9/11/01.

al jazeera - The Daily Worker could be counted on to be more balanced than that piece of ....... propaganda.

Do you think that these people in Ohio are representative of White people? Or even most White people?

al jazeera

Cassie, try this video on for size:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGv8P...eature=related

Hate is NOT unique to One race, One nation, One theology, One gender, but it IS unique to One species - Humans .... of all races, nations, beliefs, and genders.

And then there are those like Mother Teresa, Dalai Lama, Jesus, Deepak Chopra, and millions of those we have never heard of who seek another way. No, I wouldn't take anything al jazeera reports on as being anything more than a pathway towards more hate.

Default This Raises A Serious Question

One of the candidates will be elected President of the U.S. At this point, the polls all indicate that it will be Barack Obama.

The people shown on this video are all sincere in their beliefs, I'm sure. But the ideas they express largely come from the negative advertising and campaigning which has been the basis for at least one side's campaign.

Will these people change their mind's if it turns out that Obama is elected? Will they support a new President and administration in these times of serious national peril? Will the United States really be one "...one nation indivisible"? Ever again?

This type of attitude among fellow Americans isn't just too bad, it's as disturbing as anything I can imagine. This kind of attitude might represent a fatal fracture in our democracy. What's more disturbing is that many of the ideas represented by these people are the result of campaigning to be the leader of the country.

We'll reap what has been sown.

I must agree, and you have stated it much more succinctly than I so thank you. It is sad and scary that people felt it was worth going this route in a effort to "win". Not sure any of us have a net/net win with the feelings this has revealed/created.

Default I continually object to those who keep insisting.....

how bad America is....what it has degenerated to....how bad things are and on and on they drone. This droning is usually accompanied by some far flung example or a video, or usually a media or politician input on some low percentage occurance.
You have been trained to look at America through a straw (get it...ya can only see a very little bit through a straw!!!)...that is what they want you to think.
Well for years I have been saying BS to that concept. The USA in specific and the world in general are a heck of a lot better place than the few would have you believe.

Let's try talking about the majority....those people and places doing it right every day. Those with traditions that far out weigh the minority (not race) reports some of you love to live in....the media has you trained.
It is not in the medias or politicians best interest for you to think for one minute things are better than presented.

Well, they are. More people are working than not. More people are keeping their homes than not. More people are still going on vacation than not.
C'mon wake up....get away from the television and the lap top....as the saying goes get off you %(*&%$ and go smell the roses.

You can choose to live by a minority report if you like....but you are missing out on the best America has to offer....how sad....politicians love that type sheeple.

Yes, Cassie, that video is from al jazeera. In fact, at the very end, the reporter states "hate and fear are still powerful forces in America" and he signs off with his name and for whom he is reporting: "Casey Kauffman, al jazeera".

It was a disturbing video. I could only watch about half of it. The ignorance of some people never ceases to amaze me. I do wonder if these people will change their minds if Obama is elected, and assuming he does a good job. Why do I have a feeling though, that they'll forever see him as a second class citizen no matter how good he is?

SEE...I don't always listen to every word...LOL

BUT....the people being questioned probably did not know who the reporter was with....that is just a guess....

Thank you for clarifying for me, cuz!! What would I do without you....

However this does not mean....they (the people interviewed) were not true believers of what they were saying....and that is sad....
