NASA's new mission: Reach out to the Muslim world
Charles Bolden, Obama's NASA Chief during an interview June 30, 2010, with Al Jazeer, said: "When I became the NASA administrator -- or before I became the NASA administrator - [Obama] charged me with three things," Bolden said. "One was he wanted me to help re-inspire children to want to get into science and math, he wanted me to expand our international relationships, and third, and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science ... and math and engineering ."

Sounds like a tougher mission than getting to the moon - and probably not worth the effort!

It is probably a lot easier than it sounds as "Islamic" scientists did a lot.

Taltarzac, I am missing something here with the point you were making. Regardless of the Muslim world's medieval contribution to science, why would the President of the United States tell the chief of the NASA program that one of his main duties as head of NASA is reaching "out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science ... and math and engineering," ?

A moon crater is named after one very prominent Muslim scientist.
Quote:
I was only addressing the fact that Muslim science is nothing to make light of as they had some scholars who made significant contributions to science. Some of that science could even have helped put men on the moon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibn_al-Haytham |

And what about the overlooked objective to be
accomplished by such a requirement. Why single out the Muslims?
Does he think playing nice nice is a viable approach to making the terrorists feel better about the people they have vowed to kill. Do you think he separates Muslims from the terrorists. We all know the average muslim does not support what the terrorists do. We also know they will not speak out against nor support their demise. So just exactly what does Obama expect to accomplish with his directive to NASA? And exactly what magnificent contribution will it make to improving the status of the world? Answers...nothing! Zero! btk |

It does not sound like Obama actually singled out the Muslims...

So you wonder why Obama bowed to the King of Saudia Arabia? Follow with me for a few minutes and read for yourself.
For anyone interested, just for kicks and giggles, I looked on NASA's website to see what they say about Charles Bolden's statement to Al Jazeer. Well of course it is on there in black and white. Bolden is an environmental fanatic. Remember this when reading the information from NASA. But.... also when I was on NASA's site and in their search area put in "muslim." Some crazy stuff came up. Like this: RELEASE : 09-284 Dec. 19, 2009 NASA Partners with Saudi Arabia on Moon and Asteroid Research WASHINGTON -- NASA and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) have signed a joint statement that allows for collaboration in lunar and asteroid science research. The partnership recognizes the Saudi Lunar and Near-Earth Object Science Center as an affiliate partner with the NASA Lunar Science Institute at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. "This collaboration is within the scope of the Memorandum of Understanding on Science and Technology signed between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States of America last year and later ratified by the Council of Ministers," said H.H. Dr. Turki Bin Saud Bin Mohammed Al-Saud, vice president for Research Institutes, KACST. "The international interest in lunar science and, more recently, near Earth objects led to the establishment of the Saudi Lunar and Near Earth Object Science Center as a focal point for lunar science and NEO studies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, we are looking forward to our expanding collaboration with NASA for the benefit of both countries." "NASA's Lunar Science Institute exists to conduct cutting-edge lunar science and train the next generation of lunar scientists and explorers," said Greg Schmidt, institute deputy director at Ames. "Our international partnerships are critical for meeting these objectives, and we are very excited by the important science, training and education that our new Saudi colleagues bring to the NASA Lunar Science Institute." "This is an important advance in our growing program of bilateral science and technology cooperation," said U.S. Ambassador to Saudi Arabia James Smith. "It will help realize President Obama's goal, expressed in his June 4 speech to the Muslim world, of increasing our cooperation on science and technology, which we believe closely corresponds to King Abdullah's vision." The Saudi science center's proposal brings technical and engineering expertise to advance the broad goals of lunar science at the institute. Specific areas of lunar study of both scientific and cultural importance include radar and infrared imaging, laser ranging and imaging, and topographical studies. The center's studies in near-Earth object science also offer important contributions to an area of importance to NASA. "The Saudi Lunar and Near Earth Object Science Center's primary mission is to direct all lunar and near Earth object related research within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia," said Dr. Haithem Altwaijry, deputy director of the National Satellite Technology Program at KACST. "It will reach out to students in addition to researchers and present fertile ground for scientific research." "NASA welcomes international cooperation for mutual benefit with organizations large and small in all regions of the world," said Michael O'Brien, assistant administrator for external relations at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "Our continuing discussions with Saudi Arabian officials may lead to future joint scientific collaboration in other areas of mutual interest." Then I looked up Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology. http://www.the-saudi.net/saudi-arabia/kacst.htm Then I looked up Nova Stars Information Services which is on the top of the Saudi Arabia King's website for Abdulaziz City. Look it up. They are "Consultants for Special Telecommunication Systems and Satellite Networks." Obama is simply doing what comes naturally.....remember he spent some of his most formative years in the Muslim World. After attending Catholic schools for 12 years.....went I first went away to college...I stood up everytime the professors entered the room....old habits are hard to break! |

This just sickens me.
We have an opponent in fundamental Islam and our President is being ridiculed for mentioning that NASA could outreach to Muslims. Do *ANY* of you remember when nobody less than President RONALD REAGAN said the EXACT same thing regarding outreaches with THE SOVIET UNION - the very entity that he ALSO called The Evil Empire? So, let's hear the ridicule of that 80s-era policy! |
