Kirsten Powers says the liberals who led the charge need to start holding their own side accountable.

"The grand pooh-bah of media misogyny is without a doubt Bill Maher."

This subject (of Rush) came up at dinner with my husband. He repeated one of his favorite native-born Texan expressions: "Well, it sounds like he let an alligator mouth overload a jaybird ass."

Katz: What nationally syndicated personality said that? Yeah, I heard a lot of "ordinary" people slinging mud at her in ways that were beneath contempt - but can you name someone in a position similar to Limbaugh who did?

"Maher has called Palin a “dumb twat” and dropped the C-word in describing the former Alaska governor. He called Palin and Congresswoman Bachmann “boobs” and “two bimbos.” He said of the former vice-presidential candidate, “She is not a mean girl. She is a crazy girl with mean ideas.” He recently made a joke about Rick Santorum’s wife using a vibrator. Imagine now the same joke during the 2008 primary with Michelle Obama’s name in it, and tell me that he would still have a job. Maher said of a woman who was harassed while breast-feeding at an Applebee’s, “Don't show me your tits!” as though a woman feeding her child is trying to flash Maher. (Here’s a way to solve his problem: don’t stare at a strangers’ breasts). Then, his coup de grâce: “And by the way, there is a place where breasts and food do go together. It’s called Hooters!”

Will Obama Super PAC Return Misogynist Bill Maher's Million-Dollar Donation? | The Weekly Standard

"Above, you'll find video of Maher's show-ending screed against "crazy people" Bachmann and Palin, plus those who respond to criticism of the two "boobs" with blind accusations of sexism. And while it's worth watching in its entirety—there's even some Newsweek-bashing, which is always fun—the following excerpt alone should suffice to prompt discussion:

Now I'm not saying that sexism doesn't exist and isn't real, but we can't throw around the word "sexist" just to stop people like me from pointing out that Michele Bachmann, now running second for the Republican presidential nomination, isn't [sic] a dangerous nincompoop. And when I point out that Sarah Palin is a vainglorious braggart, a liar, a whiner, a professional victim, a scold, a know-it-all, a chiseler, a bully who sells patriotism like a pimp, and the leader of a strange family of inbred weirdos straight out of The Hills Have Eyes, that's not sexist. I'm saying it because it's true, not because it's true of a woman."

The difference is that Sarah Palin became a public figure when she became a politician in the national spotlight.

Sarah Fluke is a private citizen. It looks like bullying to go against someone just taking a stand on something she believes in.

Rush Limbaugh and various other Republican pundits have frequently gone after public figures. It is going after the private person that crosses the line.

Ann Coulter is often a very harsh and sometimes funny critic of liberal public figures. http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Ann_Coulter I rarely though have seen her cross into the area where she attacks someone just speaking his or her mind who is not a political figure.

So are you condoning what Maher has said? If so, you surely would be condoning Rush's comments also, by default. Correct?

So it's OK to call a person in the public eye a "c*nt", a tw*t and a whore? When did that happen?.....

If you feel that way, I think that a 30 year old dedicated "women's rights" activist who testifies at a Nancy Pelosi news conference masquerading as a "committee hearing" is putting herself squarely in the public eye.

No, that's wrong. Maher is taking issue with a politician which has a very long tradition in US politics.

Just take a look at how nasty some of the things said about people like John Adams, Abraham Lincoln, Richard Nixon, and many others have been. Remember the stain on the blue dress? Or, was it a red dress.

Maher can say whatever he likes as long as it does not actually go to a factual matter and is also wrong and done with malice.

I am not a fan of Maher. Never have watched an entire show of his unless relatives from say Massachusetts are visiting.

I have read some of Ann Coulter's books though.

How much of a choice though did Sandra Fluke really have? Still sounds like some people think that this whole thing is a charade to take the women's vote from the Republicans on the issue of contraceptives.

Your second sentence is squarely on target, except that you doubt it and this is exactly the Democrat strategy. It is exactly the strategy.

Right so Sandra Fluke only needed contraceptives at Georgetown Law during her third year of law school? She just waited to fall in love until the 2012 Election loomed?

And, then... Rush Limbaugh just had to make a fool of himself by rushing into the fray??

Seems like a double standard to me. If you are a public figure, then it's open season on you to be called anything in the book, but if you are an ordinary citizen getting involved in the public platform , then you cry foul.
