No work, no food. Simple as that.

People will need to eat. One way of another you will be paying either for the food and education or the extra police, judicial system including public attorney paid defenses and incarceration.

That's your plan to break the cycle. How is that plan working now? Have you given this much thought?

Liberal mentality is what legalized Alcohol, and soon to be marijuana. If you can't do anything about it, then legalize it. Do you really think that anyone is going to starve in America if you cut off their welfare? Welfare is abused. Only the old and frail and the handicapped deserve to be taken care of. Anyone that is able bodied, should have to work for any gov subsidy. If you get food stamps, you should only be able to use them for certain marked basics, not luxury foods. If you receive a welfare check, then you should have to do community service for it, such as babysitting gov workers' children in a provided center, filing, janitorial services, of picking up trash on the highways. If you receive a free cell phone, it should only be programmed for the police dispatcher. If you receive subsidized housing, then you should have to maintain it's cleanliness and not have anyone staying there other than registered residents. The harder you make life for the unmotivated, the more likely you will jar them out of their laziness and make them productive. If they do not wish to participate, then you do not force them to live. If they want to live on the streets, then they should have to live according to the law and rules of that community. This is a free country and no one should be forced to live inside, or to eat what the government dictates is best for them. Our community collects for the food kitchens/closets/pantries every month. If people NEED sustenance, there are charities out there. The gov should not FORCE us to support the gov charity. Everyone agrees that the gov is the worst business manager in the country. Leave charity to those that want to see how their donation is being used, and managed.

Really? And if we don't provide food, housing a phone they will be qualified for a good job. Is that the plan? That will break the cycle. I don't think it will.

Her idea is to break the cycle by putting kids to work for one year after the eighth grade. I compared it to student teaching. I remember a lot of student teachers who only found out when they did their student teaching in their senior year that it was not a good career fit.

My observation is that the kids that did their homework were the most likely to succeed. How do you light fire? This is my friends idea to light the fire.

What is your idea?

There is no "solution" that's the difficult point that you and many others don't understand. Those living in the slums of the inner city will never "be like us", they just won't. I do have solutions, but you won't like them. You insist you can help them get out. Well, nobody has EVER solved the poor and poverty. Not everyone is smart enough to make it on their own...it's a cold hard fact. I suggest we stop encouraging them to breed. Money for babies isn't working.

Taking an 8th grader out of school for a year? It's insane. It takes a month of makeup from what they forget over the summer! Imagine a whole year.

On second thought, maybe a great idea after all. Those who want, return to school. Those who don't, didn't want to be there in the first place, were probably disruptive, and they can be sent to trade school. Don't Europeans do something like this with tests? We waste so much time and effort on trying to educate the uneducatable.

Don't work in the garden, you don't eat.

Why do women (mostly) have a problem with that attitude? Twice as many women as men collect welfare benefits. Women GENETICALLY expect to be taken care of. They need to be provided for during and after pregnancy. A pregnant woman can't survive in the wild alone. Nor survive with a newborn. Women are programmed to look for a good provider who will help her raise her children. That's why women look for candidates who "look out for them". Look to the alpha male for his protection.

What's the ONLY solution to the rising poor problem? Not making more poor. Free housing encourages them, MAKE them work for their house, if nothing more than keeping it clean, painted, repaired, cleaning up the neighborhood, etc. MAKE them work for their meals, nothing is free, I had to work to pay the taxes that buys their food, they can do SOMETHING for their meals. Education has been proven to be a huge waste of time, personnel, money, resources, etc. They don't learn anything. They'll never get a real job, a white collar job. Only a VERY few % of affirmative action students actually graduate. More than half drop out during the first year. They're simply overwhelmed. Some people aren't smart enough to live in a modern polite society. It's a fact of nature and THAT is the problem we need to solve. Not how to make them "equals", they'll never be, but how to incorporate them to do the least damage.

Mind you, I'm talking about the hard core, inner city poor, not everyone.
