Default How much do you really know/understand about America's oil dependency?

A lot is said by many of us and often is a reflection of current events or what we just heard or read in the news. Sometimes we are merely parrots for the social or political rhetoric fed to us by which ever group we favor.
On the subject of oil dependence how much do you really know? What is your understanding of what IS GOING TO HAPPEN in the event of a major disruption of oil supply?

Do you know where our daily oil comes from? How about who is the biggest user of oil world wide? By how much? Of what we import what is the single largest use of oil?

America's Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SRP); currently being considered by the Washington Wizards to be tapped to head off the rising prices of oil. Surely they cannot be serious. The capacity of the SRP is 727,000,000 barrels. Depending on the source one uses we use 30,000,000 barrels per day. That is a 27 day supply assuming no oil coming in which will not ever be the case. But it does some what put it in perspective. It also answers the question that it is not a solution to the problem

Here are 4 links that if you take the time to read them you will have a better understanding of our oil driven vulnerability. And why it is a matter of ultimate survival and yet we are doing little or nothing to protect ourselves.
Enjoy the reading/education:

Aside from terrorism there is no greater threat to the USA.

"Two days after the White House said it would comply with a federal judge's ruling forcing the administration to act on offshore drilling permits, the Obama administration announced tonight that it will now appeal that ruling."

Change we can count on!

Time after time after time we get these 'emergencies' that demonstrate why we need to move towards electricity and away from oil. We keep hearing, as another said, that a given solution would take 10+ years to implement (like building a batch of nuke plants to build up our electrical infrastructure so we could use more electricity for more things, including transportation which is an economic lifeblood).

I heard it in 1973 and I'm hearing it now almost 40 years later.

Default And in the 40 years our percentage of foreign oil

total consumption has more than doubled. Back then the Energy Dept. was created to carry out the planning and implementation of projects and programs "so this could never happen to us again".

Absolutely nothing has been done. The Energy Dept. is still in existence...doing and reporting what?

If we ever decided to do nothing about terrorism I would like to think we the people would be up in arms about it with their lawmakers. A threat that is as ominous in scope that can destroy our way of life...tomorrow...gets little play.
