Default Tornado Shelter

Hey Friends, what is your best opinion on where in a ranch style home we should shelter in the event of a tornado? We have an Amarillo.

Your walk-in closet or interior hallway! Don't forget to close the doors to all the rooms as will help with pressure inside your home. We will be in our closet and that's the ONLY door that will remain open!

A bathroom with no windows. Many have been saved by huddling in the bathtub and covering with lots of pillows.

If you have an interior laundry room consider using it.

That is what we are going to do. Here are the reasons we made our decision.

The wall with water lines and dryer vent will be constructed with 2x6 studs making it stronger. If another wall is common with your kitchen cabinet wall it will also have 2x6 studs. Even additional protection.

More importantly sit on the floor next to, and lower than, your washer/dryer. Those two appliances will support a great amount of vertical weight in the event anything may crash down on you. Try to cover your head even if it’s only 2-3 hats. Biking helmets are perfect to use. A last resort, roll up bath/beach towel , wrap around your neck and cover your head with large metal cooking pot. (Not said in jest, you get the idea, protect your head.)

We are putting these items in our laundry room now in case we have to quickly go there. You may only have seconds if a tornado has your home in it’s track.

Look both ways before crossing.

Western PA, Marietta GA, finally TV....
