It's a GPS system not a map. It will point in whatever direction you're moving in. If you are driving east, then "up" will be east. Up is "ahead of you." Down is "behind you." Right is "to the right of you" and left is "to the left of you."
It takes some getting used to. I resisted for months, but I finally gave in and practiced a few times. Now, I find myself confused as to how I managed without it!
