We are back up.
Hey everyone, We are back up and running again.
We had multiple malicious code attacks.
It took a long time to do all of this and we still have a lot of work to do now.
We have updated to the very latest code and are now paying for a service that will get us back up and running much faster if we get hacked again.
We really apologize and thank you so much for your patience.

Papa_lecki... You ask "Why..." Hacking is very common. The business of the hacked site has nothing to do with the attacks. There isn't anything personal about the attacks. The attackers simply want to gain access to ANY site, and to compromise it with the intent to use it as an advertising platform ... not to actually sell any merchandise, but to get the revenue associated with clicks.

What a hacker might do
SPEAKING IN GENERAL AS FYI - NOTHING IMPLIED LIKE THIS SPECIFIC TO THIS APP...
What can happen if a company gets hacked?
If a company is hacked, and an outsider gain total access as if they were the owner of said company, that outsider can now act as if they were that company.
They can encrypt your files and charge you money to restore them.
They can put malicious code in place to infect other people.
They can send out emails directing others to do things to compromise their private information, provide links that look genuine, gain access to their computers.
It's all about money. Hackers find ways to trick people into providing information that leads to stealing their money.
It's also about attacking a differential viewpoint or authority - political, social, government, religious, news, special interest, etc. Cyber warfare so to speak.
Whatever level of hack happened here was isolated within their walls. Highly commend them for not exposing any of their customers to anything. This was a win in my book.

No, it is not.
While The Villages (free) app certainly has its uses, navigation is not its strong suit. The GPS engine in the free app appears to have serious latency issues, which cause it to lag in reporting real time positioning information. This is not a big deal if you are stationary, and merely wanting to see your current position on a map. But, when moving and using the app for navigation, it can be a real headache.
The Villages GPS (paid) app does not have those issues. The map updates in real time, and directions are called out prior to any required change in course. The free app frequently gives you turn instructions after you have already passed the intersection.
And, can anyone seriously complain about paying a $6.99 one-time fee for an app with that kind of value? Plus, at least on Android phones, you can add the app to your family library and share it with no additional fee. We bought the app prior to moving here, and it was indispensable in helping us get around when we were new. I might not use it a lot nowadays, but still find it useful if we are going somewhere we have never been.
