Wow! I honestly do not understand all of the hate for Tiger Woods here. The guy is arguably the best who has ever played the game. Obviously there is going to be a lot of interest in him every time he tees it up. It's a story whether he plays well or plays poorly or doesn't play.
People here seem to be wishing that he won't make the cut or make the cut and play poorly on the weekend. Other people are implying that he has faked injury as an excuse to withdraw from tournaments. The guy has had back surgery. His back, much like Fred Couples' will always be an issue. If you think that he's a quitter, just look back to the 2008 US Open where not only did he finish with a knee that was extremely painful but beat Rocco Mediate in a playoff. The guy is tough. He doesn't give up.
Why aren't people upset about Rory McIlroy who is currently three shots behind Tiger?
I learned something about The Masters from an old golf professional many years ago. It doesn't always hold true but it's almost a pretty good bet, mostly because of the nature of the golf course and the field, that the score after 36 holes will be two or three shots of the winning score and the person leading after 36 doesn't usually win. Anyone who makes the cut usually has a chance to win with a good third round.
Right now, Jordan Spieth is playing golf of historic proportions. I'd love to see him keep it up and break all the records, but the odds and history are against that.
Nothing whatever happens in this tournament will not surprise me. Don't forget, when Tiger won his first tournament, he shot 40 on the first nine holes and was way back in the pack after the first round. Spieth could continue to play like he's been playing and shoot 30 under and break all records. He could come out tomorrow and shoot 80 and be back in the middle of the pack. Tiger is playing pretty well today. One good round tomorrow and he could be in the thick of it.
I've watched this tournament for a long time and the suspense is what makes it interesting. You really never know what to expect. People shoot lights out and people crash and burn. It's that kind of a golf course.
Don't forget, this is Tiger's first event after a long, long layoff. He has been injured physically and psychologically. It's my opinion that in spite of what he has said in press conferences that he was suffering from the chip yips. If that's the case, the fact that he is playing tournament golf at all is remarkable. Chip yips usually spells the end of a career. It's one of the reasons, along with a physical issue, that I don't play any longer.
I don't know of anyone who has ever overcome chip yips. And if this is indeed the case then Tiger has accomplished another super human feat.
