We don't use a lot of water to cook with but when filling a boiler for spaghetti you will see the flake floating in the pot of water. Also we have a plastic rectangular shaped pitcher we fill with water each day to fill the coffee brewer. It is filled daily and immediately poured into the coffer brewer, but over a few months the inside of the pitcher will become coated with a black film. We are sure is from the black flakes in the water.
I have black flakes also. I called warranty and they told me it was the inside of the hose under the kitchen sink. I was told I was out of warranty but the manufacturer would replace the hose. The manufacturer mailed me new parts. I haven't called a plumber yet for the installation.
