Whatever happened to "an eye for an eye" (aka appropriate consequences)? Death is not an appropriate consequence for the crime committed--that is more vigilantism (aka stand-your-ground) than justice.

We lived in Idaho and Utah, at that time, home invasions and robberies were almost unheard of, except in the obituaries.
As a native rural Montanan, I believe you are indulging in hyperbole and wishful nostalgia.
