The one thing I knew was that my future husband would NOT be in the military. I'd lived that life enough to know how hard it was on the women and kids.

Anyway, I worked at the Fort Ord Officer's Club as a secretary but was helping out because the cocktail waitress didn't show up (again!). One company was having a beer call. To put it mildly, the booze had been flowing for a few hours. This one really cute captain asked, "Are you married, separated, single, divorced or thinking about it." I was impressed he could roll that off his tongue after 5 beers, two shots and something else. We dated. He asked me to marry him. I said no way -- three times.

When he got notice that he was going to be riffed out, I finally said yes. We married two weeks before he got out of the Army after dating for almost 2 years. He really was and is a great guy and we had 10 years of a good marriage. The last 2 just had us drifting in different directions. We're still friends and, hopefully, always will be.
