Your rant reminds me of a story from the Civil War era.
General Robert E. Lee was hosting a formal dinner party for some of his top staff officers, and a few officers of lower grade.
At one point a junior officer got the attention of the entire group and told an "off color" joke. He was embarrassed when
no one laughed.
In an attempt to cover his embarrassment, the officer said, "Well, at least there were no ladies present."
General Lee replied, "No, Lieutenant. But there are
gentlemen present."
