You are correct, but large cities had a two digit zone number. I don't think that small towns had that.
You are also correct about the phone numbers. The two letters represented a word, i.e., LI stood for Livingston, as an example. However, in south Jersey, all the phone numbers were only five digits.
Life was so much simpler way back then . . . or was it??!?
