You are also correct about the phone numbers. The two letters represented a word, i.e., LI stood for Livingston, as an example. However, in south Jersey, all the phone numbers were only five digits.

It was simpler. The fact that no one can remember their phone number anymore but I still remember PY1-7524 from 60 years ago. PY stood for Pyramid.
