If the trunk is small (less than 4 inches) I would wrap a tow strap around the base of the trunk, attach the other end of the strap to the tow hitch on my truck, put the truck in 4WD, put the truck in first gear, and pull the tree out of the ground. Should come out clean, root ball included. Have done this before and worked great.
