To purchase the same modem at Best Buy as the Comcast modem, which includes the landline phone connection, would be about $220. For me, it makes more sense to rent the Comcast modem for about $10 per month. If the modem you own malfunctions, or even if your service fails and Comcast blames it on your modem, how long will it take you to get your service restored? If your modem is under warranty, it may take weeks to enforce the warranty, and you will be out of service.
