Yes, there is buffering going on under the covers. I suspect the OP is referring to an interruption in the video, which is generally not typical unless there is some issue. Netflix negotiates the resolution it streams so there shouldn't be any interruptions (i.e. if it realizes that it cannot obtain enough bandwidth to stream 1080p without interruptions it will degrade the resolution to something lower to prevent interruptions, say 720p).
