Most of the people in costume must have seen the movie dozens of times, as they would do all kinds of things (confetti/water pistols/flashlights/etc.)...at certain parts of the film.

It was all in good fun and by making them midnight showings, it kept the real 'stick-in-the-muds' at home...because their bedtime was around 8:00PM.
Plus the film has the longest-running release in film history. I never went, but our kids did. Maybe OP just wants to relive some of that era. I'm not sure it would be well received due to recent terror events, however. Times do change.
