I'm glad to see the US Open getting back to a formula that worked so well for many years. Narrow fairways, long, thick rough and firm fast greens.

I missed the US Open in 2015 when they played at a shaved down Pinehurst #2 and in 2017 with a wide open Erin Hills. It just didn't seem like a US Open. It was good to see them back at Oakmont last year and Shinnecock, (which might be the best golf course in the world) this year.

Because of its location near the ocean and the ages of its greens, Shinnecock is a difficult place to get the conditions right every day. Some people complain about that, but I think that it brings the ability to adapt to conditions into consideration. The greens are very sloping and we saw what can happen if they get too fast back in 2004. This year they had another problem. By not cutting the greens down, poa annua can be quite bumpy. There's nothing more difficult than extremely fast bumpy greens. But the choices that they had were extremely fast where balls would run off the greens or fast and bumpy. The conditions in 2004, especially of the seventh green were absurd. They made the right choice.

I think that when the winning score of a US Open is around even par, the USGA has done their job correctly.
