There's no such thing as a harmless snake. Their bites HURT even if it's a non-venomous snake! I got bit by a garter snake. Poor thing was traumatized, my cat caught it while we were out in the garden, and was shaking it between her jaws. I had to pry her mouth open to get the snake out, and it clamped down on the side of my hand. No stitches needed, just a good cleaning and antibiotic ointment. We all three (cat, snake, and me) lived to tell the tale though. Dumb cat.
