In our own individual lives, the choice whether to abandon a comfortable local maximum can be wrenching. If life is good (or safe) already should I consider changing the status quo? My parents taught me that the "very best" is always the enemy of "just good enough" as is "leave it alone" is to "make it better". Back in the olden days, my psychology professor taught us that as a rule, people become more content as they age. A plausible explanation is that the prospect of making "dramatic" improvements or changes in one's life recedes, as anxiety increases about taking on the associated labor and risks.
