And, no one wants to defund police; they just want to divert some of the funding and use it to invest in programs like you mention. It’s inappropriate to use gun-toting, skittish police to deal with social issues. Using people trained in social issues is a better choice.

"First you must release us from liability. If we send a social worker and your boyfriend winds up hurting or killing you we cannot be sued by you or a family member".
Using people trained in social issues would be great, however, who decides when that is the appropriate course of action? Last I heard there are no mind readers. No one knows the extent of the problem until they get there. Ever heard of the saying, "hope for the best but be prepared for the worst". Unfortunately, being prepared for the worst means sending those "gun toting, skittish police".
