To do the job correctly, you need to install an expansion tank above the water heater. Some older houses do not currently have one because they were built before the building code required them. If you don't have one, there would be some additional piping work required. The expansion tank will stabilize the water pressure in your house, and prevent damage to your water heater and all other plumbing fixtures in your house.
