I think the answer to the questions are yes and no. The crowds at the restaurants are definitely down. Renters have more vacancies and rents are less expensive. All of those who I talk to are tightening their belts. Restaurants and retailers are getting real creative in their advertising. Lots of sales, buy one get one free. discount coupons, etc.
I think there may be less effect on The Villages than nation wide. With most of us retired there are fewer layoffs. I expect that goes for those who are employed. In fact, a friend who works for The Villages had her hours increased.
Lastly, the doom and gloom reporting by the media puts a damper on spending.
