When I first moved up here from Orlando & had to use Century Link for my landline, I had the same problem you are encountering. It had nothing to do with using "1".
You need to contact them & tell them you need long distance service. They have to do something - as I recall it is in the wiring in the house - & then you will be fine. I love having free long distance & prefer my landline. I am not real happy using a so-called smart phone. I am old school but I am happy. The cost for CL is not outrageous at all.
