The haters will probably jump all over this, but we find this a common practice here, in dental and medical. Just very different, and your example was very representative of much more costly, and often much more invasive techniques. Our previous doctors and dentists would always say " this may not work out but.... it may be fine and last with not problems so let's start there". Had other things, where doctors starting point was the most invasive and most costly alternatives, it really does not inspire confidence that the least risky and/or, most conservative path is followed.
