(Are masks helpful or not? Do COVID survivors need to be vaccinated? Which vaccine is better.? etc. etc.) In the meantime, we need for the scientists to continue to research and to report on what they find to the scientific community and the public. And ALL of that research needs to be available to the public.

And on what basis is the average person supposed to "make up their own mind"?
I believe there are 2 competing versions of string theory---one has 13 spatial and one temporal dimension, the other 27 spatial and 2 temporal dimensions. I could read everything ever written by the experts that "disagree" on which is correct, and not have a clue, because I don't have the background or education in quantum physics and the math that goes with it. So trying to "make up my own mind" would be useless.
Same thing with all the COVID research. Non-professionals have some familiarity with medical issues usually through an experience or two, but in no way does that make them any more qualified to "make up their own mind" than it would for string theory.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
