Try garden clippers (pruning shears) which are virtually the same as are tin snips (but snips may be a bit heavier). If you have a pair in your garage there is no need to buy a "special plastic cutting shear". Amazon has a set of 3 different pairs of shears PLUS a free set of garden gloves for $15 and you can trim your plants and open plastic sealed stuff and keep your hands clean as a bonus!
