I used to hate Scotch,.. I mean, really hate Scotch.

Later, I went on a graduate school trip to Scotland and was lucky enough to room with the grandson of a major jewelry chain. He like to drink, and he liked to show off, so he bought flights of scotch every night and seldom paid attention to who actually drank them.

We went to a pub named the Copper Pot in Glasgow. The bartender asked what I wanted and I shared that I didn't like Scotch (the only thing they served). The bartender took a little offense and accepted the challenge to change my mind.

They had shots (Drams as they call them) from $5 to $2000. The $2000 stuff was locked behind plexiglass on the top shelf.

Once I realized that Scotch was a slow sipping drink rather than a head-tilting fast swallow, I began to appreciate the smokey brew. The bartender pointed out the caramel notes, the fruit, and the grasses.

Somehow, I staggered away with an appreciation for Scotch. My rich show-off room-mate made sure my dram was never empty that trip and I still drink Scotch from time to time.

I generally drink Johnny Walker Black as it is a good mid-point between the top and bottom shelf.
