The warm air from the fire rises and condenses in the cooler air above. That along with the smoke particles that the moisture can cling to makes a temporary cloud. Out west some big wildfires do this and can actually make huge clouds that produce lightning. Amazing!

That explains it, we live in the general area and a couple times each week we get a very strong smell of smoke from a fire outside. It typically happens at night, but recently it has happened during the day.
