The first thing i would do is go to the building department and get your exact house plans (about 16 pages). This will show if there are any load bearing walls. It will also show all of the wiring and NONE of the plumbing. These will also give you something to sketch out your ideas for discussion with the contractor. The other item is to make sure you can get matching tile (or other flooring) for this area in case your plans involve moving cabinets as well as walls.
