Yes, I paid over 50 years into it and did not have a choice of whether or not to pay. My employers had to match it. (Funny how that part is never mentioned.) They were not given a choice, either. It was either pay or not be in business. Would you pay into any other program where you were assured that you would get a return on your investment and then say, "Oh, that's ok. I don't think I'll take it?" We were never told that it would be enough for complete retirement, but was intended as a supplement to whatever other funds we acquire on our own. (I even had one employer that listed his portion among the "benefits" they offered their employees. Hello, every other business in town had the same "benefit" so why should I choose Business A over Business B on that basis?)
