You apparently have missed the reason she was in prison. She didn't protest or believe she had the "right of free speech" in Russia, she was carrying DRUGS into the county. That's not a "minor crime" in Russia, as it should be in the USA, it's a MAJOR crime.
She got the right to protest and avail herself of all the rights and liberties she's entitled to in the USA, she has no right to break Russian laws and it shouldn't have been any concern of the U.S. Government, how Russia exercises it's sovereign right to enforce its laws and impose whatever sentence they deem appropriate.
