Not true. Most all smartphones today have a GPS chip that receives and processes the GPS satellite signals. Most phones use GPS along with cell tower signals to provide positioning and speed data. The reason your navigation doesn’t work in airplane mode is because all your maps are internet based and without access to those maps you can’t navigate. Even at low speeds, your location and speed calculated by your phone is very accurate.
