My understanding from internet "research", many refrigerator repair techs state that the water/ice through the door refrigerators are simply bad designs. First of all, the unit sits inside the refrigerator section taking up a fair amount of space, and since its within the frig section it doesn't stay cold enough to prevent melting. When we moved to TV, our home had all new appliances to include a water/ice through the door frig. After about 6 months, with ice issues including it dumping ice on the floor, we replace it with a french door refrig, no through the door features, with the ice maker in the lower freezer section.
