The thousands, no millions, of people who gloat that they will "blow away" anybody that threatens them, or breaks into their house, have no idea what it's like to hold somebody's life in their hands.

If you make the wrong decision in a split second, your whole life is lost. You can lose your house, your family, your home, or your life. If you make the wrong decision, you can spend the rest of your life in prison. In any event, you will spend the rest of time wondering if you did the right thing, or if their could have been an alternative.

When I was much younger, I was a cop for four years in Mahoning County, Ohio. I thought my uniform and my gun were a great equalizer. That notion faded fast the first time I had a man in my gun sight. Worse yet is the feeling when a wrong doer has you in his gun sight.

Aside from all the obvious ramifications of using a gun for defense in your home, I investigated a case where a man's wife lost most of her hearing permanently when her husband discharged a .357 magnum in their bedroom, shooting at an intruder. The intruder who was serious injured, but survived, was their drunk neighbor who wandered onto the wrong patio.
