Dogs eating poop, or licking dirt, dust, etc. (coprophagy) is a sign that they are not getting proper nourishment. They are looking for more nutrients. You may be feeding your dog a food that is easily available, advertised on television as being very healthy, and is sold in most grocery stores. You may think your providing good food for your dog, but it may be the worst food available. Please take a few minutes to read the following post that includes a way to score the safety of your dog's food, and also has assign a score to number of foods.
Some of the worst foods are Beneful, most anything by Purina, Alpo, Kibbles & Bits, Old Roy and most of those made by the big food corporations. They take the food that is inedible for human consumption and put it in dog food, including cancerous meat, spoiled grains, and corn (which dogs cannot digest). Some dog foods even include road kill and euthanized pets. Dogs have died from from malnutrition by being fed nothing but Beneful.
It's smarter to spend a little extra for high quality food, rather than spend the same money later on vet bills for a sick animal. If you love your dog, do some research on dog food:
