You must be actually living in your home on January 1st. You can apply for homestead exemption between January 1st and March 31st. You will go to the Sheriff's annex, on 466 - the Tax collector's office is on the back side of the building. Also, when you go and, if you are 65, be sure to apply for the Senior exemption. Take a copy (of what would be 2010 tax returns - if they are done - if not, you will have until June 1st to provide it) - this will let you know if you are eligible for the added $25,000 exemption. (That added exemption is actually based on income). Hope this helps.
