Petunias are more of a winter plant here, like pansies, although the petunias need to be covered in heavy frost and might not look good for a while but they usually come back if partially frost damaged. This is my first full season, but I understand that the petunias will die out once it gets hot, probably around April sometime, maybe May? I don't think geraniums will look too good in the summer either, but not as sure about them.
There are wonderful alternatives though, that we can't grow up north. I planted my first pentas - not sure if that's just a southern flower or not, but I never heard of them up north. So far they are not impressive, but perhaps I just need patience - and more fertilizer - and fewer rabbits
