Barb, I have never heard of this method before.... probably because is an easy and inexpensive procedure to use on your pet. Imagine the cost of taking your pet to the Vet to have a tick removed. Some people will do this as they are afraid they might remove the body and leave the head intact.
Although I have never found a tick (and rarely a flea) on any of the pets I have owned, I will most definitely pass this tip on to all my friends with pets.
