This one has been going around for awhile. I tried it and it did absolutely nothing. Another similar tip, which also didn't work was to coat the tick with petroleum jelly. I had to get the tweezers out and remove the tick the old fashioned way.
Later I found an effective tick removal tool at a pet store. It's a little plastic gizmo which slides along the dogs skin and sort of scoops up the tick. It's difficult to get through the fur to the tick but the little critter comes right out without damage.
