We did the same thing at one place I worked.
This is a true story of 20 people who worked at a location in my home town, Yonkers, New York. Every week one person collected a dollar from each worker for the lottery. One person decided he didn't want to continue to contribute a dollar and hid in the restroom when the money was being collected. Well sure enough, that is the week they hit the lottery for a million dollars. It wasn't enough to quit their jobs but did provide money their families needed.
The worker who didn't participate did not receive a dime.
