This is a little off-topic, but I heard from a farmer years ago that whether you had too little dirt or too much dirt left over when planting (or digging fence post holes) depended on the phase of the moon.

Since it's now the full moon, perhaps if you had planted during the dark phase of the moon you wouldn't have had excess dirt? You said that you added potting soil, so that's likely the reason for the excess dirt, but has anybody else ever heard of the connection between the volume of dirt and the phase of the moon?
